Type: Activity
Learning Strategy: Case study
Topic: Agricultural chemicals
This activity is a sample from the Reconstructors unit, part of the new upd8 Segue course. Find out more about the course
In this unit students are part of a team of forensic engineers. They travel to disasters all over the world to piece together what went wrong, work out who is to blame and try to prevent future tragedies. They are called to the scene of a fire at a livery stables on a farm. The police think the stable owners started the fire deliberately, as an insurance scam. The owners call in the Reconstructors to gather evidence and work out what really happened.
The Barn fire sequence develops the Big Idea of chemical patterns, guiding students in writing balanced chemical equations to describe the reactions of calcium carbonate and other compounds of calcium.
